Research is crucial and resources are finite
Reflection on the need for oncology research in surgery and radiotherapy, based on the analysis of investment allocated to these areas.
Contexto
Research is crucial and resources are finite.
The main treatments for most solid tumours are surgery and radiotherapy. In 2015, it was estimated that more than 80% of new cancer cases worldwide require surgery, and up to 50% require radiotherapy.
Despite this, the analysis shows that only 1.4% of research investment went to surgical research and 2.8% to radiotherapy research.
These findings highlight the need for oncology research in surgery and radiotherapy.
